Fueled by Conillons,
At 54 million Brazil is expected to harvest a record “low” cropBrazil’s total coffee output in 2013 may reach 54 million bags, a record for the smaller crop of the biennial harvest. While Brazil is the coffee largest producer, its components are as follows:■Largest unwashed arabica■2nd Robusta Producer■2nd/3rd Washed Arabica ProducerThe bumper low cycle crop comes from the continuous expansion of conillon (robusta) production in Brazil.  It is not that arabica production doesn’t fall, following the traditional pattern, even with the enhanced care that high prices allowed.  It is more that conillon production keeps gaining and becoming a larger share of the total production.Brazil is by far the second largest producer of Robusta, and nowhere on the world is robusta production growing as fast as in Brazil;  encouraged by huge profit margins derived from high productivity and low costs. This matches a global pattern of explosive robusta demand, both in the form of replacement, as a world hit by the crisis looks for the cheaper, and of fresh new demand in emerging markets.
